The Student Organization Awards Banquet brings together the leadership of Tufts’ Student Organizations to celebrate their accomplishments during the school year. Each year, the Office for Campus Life receives over 100 nominations for the awards. Members of the Tufts community including students, faculty, and staff, come together to present the awards to these hard working organizations.
The Office for Campus Life presents several awards to student organizations. (see descriptions below).

Herald Award (Publicity of the Year Award)
A student organization’s publicity effort is an important part of the event-planning process. This award is given in recognition of the outstanding ability of a student organization to think out of the box when it comes to advertising. The organization recognized with this award was able to use creative and effective marketing and publicity techniques to attract students to events or to draw attention to specific causes.
Imagination Award (Innovation and Creativity Award)
Imagination is necessary in almost every aspect of student organizations. Whether exhibited in innovative programming, member recruitment, or in the internal functions of the organization, imagination and innovation are the characteristics that set these organizations apart. This award is given in recognition of a group that successfully implemented an innovative way to fulfill its mission within the Tufts community.
Jumbo Award (Campus Community Award)
Part of Tufts University’s mission is to contribute to the advancement of humanity and the improvement of today’s global community and environment. This award is given in recognition of the organization that has made an outstanding and meaningful contribution to the Tufts community. There are many ways in which this can be accomplished: through the contribution of materials, services, inspiration, or a sense of connection to one another.
Legacy Award
The Dot Mc Aveeney Legacy Award is given to a student organization who has achieved outstanding success this year but also has stood the test of time and become a legacy student organization at Tufts. This organization not only succeeded this year but has been a sustainable and successful organization since its inception. This organization will well known and respected by students, staff and the outside community. Through its mission this organization adds year after year to the thriving intellectual and social campus community that is Tufts University. This award is named in honor of Dot McAveeney who served as a staff member at Tufts for 33 years; most notably and recently as the Staff Assistant in the Office for Campus Life.
Mount Olympus Award (Greek Chapter of the Year)
This award recognizes the accomplishments and achievements of an organization within the Tufts University Greek System. The organization recognized by this award has proven that they can carry out self-governance effectively, embody the values of the Greek System, promote leadership and student learning, and/or model social justice. This award recognizes Greek System members who are also leaders in academic, social, and community service organizations.
New Organization of the Year Award
The diverse Tufts student community requires continually updated programs and organizations that can address new and changing student needs and current important issues. This award is given in recognition of an outstanding, newly recognized student organization at Tufts this year. The New Organization of the Year has begun working toward achieving goals related to their mission, and have proven that they have a promising future at Tufts.
Standing Room Only Award (Program of the Year)
Student organizations this year reached out to all types of audiences at Tufts. Part of Tufts’ vision is to seek quality in everything that it does both in and beyond the classroom. “Standing Room Only” is a phrase synonymous with the outstanding success of an event or program. This award is given in recognition of one such highly successful and popular program within the Tufts community.
Student Organization of the Year Award
The Student Organization of the Year Award recognizes a student group that has proven that they are able to serve Tufts students in a meaningful way. The Student Organization of the Year has made significant contributions to the Tufts community or beyond during this year. This group has been able to set goals and work toward achieving them while exhibiting ingenuity and dedication in everything it does.
Synergy Award (Co-Sponsored Program of the Year)
This award is given in recognition of a co-sponsored program that exhibited synergy, or the collaboration of different factors working together toward a common end. The organizations recognized with this award have proven that they can break down barriers between diverse student populations, fostering greater communication between different organizations on campus.
